5 Minute Interview: Lance Ekum
Alvin: Who are you, what do you do, and what do you enjoy most about it?
Lance: Hi, I’m Lance Ekum. More than just that name, though – I’m a husband, father, lover of life, inspirer of others, creator of good.
I write an inspirational/personal growth blog at the Jungle of Life.
Life is a journey…a journey that is unique and personal for each one of us. What I find great personal joy in, is traveling this journey with others, in the shared experiences that intersect our lives. The Jungle of Life has become a place to live this out, creating moments of deeper connection in this life journey.
Alvin: Pick any man in the world as your role model who would it be and why?
Lance: If I could think of any one man I’ve personally been around, easily that role model is my own father. He was always there while I was growing up, and he gave me a strong base from which to grow into the man I’ve become today. Without his guidance, both early on in life…and continuing yet today…I wouldn’t be the man I am now.
Alvin: What do you wish to accomplish 1 year from today?
Lance: “To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children … to leave the world a better place … to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.” ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson
If, one year from today, I can look back over this past year and honestly nod my head, that in some way, I’ve touched upon these words by Emerson, the year will be complete.
Alvin: What has been your greatest experience so far as a dad?
Lance: We recently went kayaking as a whole family. In itself this was nothing “over the top” in my life as a father. Still, it fits so well with how I view life and my role as a father.
It’s in the moments, seemingly ordinary moments, that are truly extraordinary. The experience of fully “being” with my children, with my family…is the greatest experience in my role as a dad.
Alvin: What has been your largest step to manhood?
Lance: While there have been many steps, the largest step into manhood was the birth of my first son (…and it’s hard to believe that he is now sixteen years old…). In that moment, there was this greater sense of awe for life, and perhaps even more – a stepping up to the plate, per se, in my role as both husband and father. In that moment, as new life entered this world, I had this deeper sense of purpose…that this life I was living, it was for more than just me…
Alvin: What has been the best advice you received about being a man?
Lance: Shortly out of college, I was working for a company that was having financial difficulties. I chose to pursue other options, and found a new opportunity. I recall, very much, the day I turned in my resignation letter. The gentleman I worked for at the time was truly that – a gentleman. His words to me, were positive and affirming, and filled with sage advice. What stands out for me, though, was his handling of this moment with grace and beauty.
The best advice, then, was really in the actions of one gentleman in what could have easily been a negative moment. I *try* to live my life in these terms…in both the good and the challenging moments of life….with grace and beauty…0
