5 Minute Interview: Dragos Roua
Alvin: Who are you, what do you do, and what do you enjoy most about it?
Dragos: I am Dragos Roua, a (almost) 40 years old Romanian. I had many jobs in my life (one of them as an anchor man in a radio station, for almost 7 years) until I decided to become my own boss and started an online publishing company. I sold the company 2 years ago and decided to start a personal development blog. This blog (fairly popular, 4000+ subscribers) became the platform for all of my business related activities. I wrote a few book/ebooks, I created an iPhone app and many other things, all of them emerging from my blogging. What I enjoy the most about it? Hard to tell. It’s the thrill of learning, the challenge, the satisfaction, the connection with other people. The feeling of freedom and doing each and every single day exactly what I want to do.
Alvin: Pick any man in the world as your role model who would it be and why?
Dragos: Unfortunately, I don’t have such a role model. When I was younger I was fascinated by Hemmingway, but that was long time ago. I guess role models are just hooks we use to fix ourselves to the rocks, while we climb our own mountain. In order to actually climb, we have to get rid of them after they’re not needed anymore. Otherwise we will not climb, we’d be stuck on the same level.
Alvin: Taking steps to be brilliantly better you must take risk. Please share a risk recently taken and its purpose?
Dragos: I decided to move to New Zealand. Didn’t finished it yet, but I took some serious steps, like setting up my own company there. I am somehow addicted to risk. I think any entrepreneur is. Why I picked New Zealand? Because is really far away from my actual country (Romania) and because it’s a beautiful place. Really beautiful.
Alvin: What do you like most about being a father?
Dragos: Witnessing my children while they discover their own world.
Alvin: What has been your largest step to manhood?
Dragos: When I was in the army (mandatory service in my country when I was younger) I was in the middle of a series of events called the Romanian Revolution. It was actually a short, but very intense civil war. I didn’t sleep for 5 nights and 6 days. I was for a few times on the edge of dying. After everything chilled, I realized that if I didn’t die in that circumstance, I will never die.
Alvin: What has been the best advice you’ve received about being a man?
Dragos: Take risks, be bold and take responsibility for what you do.0
